What is Dietetics? (Dietitian)

Dietetics is the science and practice of applying nutrition knowledge to support health, manage disease, and improve overall well-being. Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs) are university-trained health professionals who use the latest evidence to provide individualised advice about food, diet, and lifestyle.

Food is not just fuel – it provides the nutrients your body needs to function, repair, and thrive. What you eat has a direct impact on your energy levels, immune function, gut health, mood, weight, and risk of chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

Dietitians work with people of all ages and health needs to translate nutrition science into everyday, practical advice. Whether you need help managing a medical condition, improving your diet quality, or simply knowing what’s right for you, dietetics provides safe, tailored guidance.

Dietetic Treatment

Dietetic treatment involves assessing your nutritional needs, health conditions, and lifestyle, then creating a personalised plan to help you achieve your goals.

Your dietitian will often start with a thorough assessment of your medical history, current diet, and lifestyle factors. From there, treatment may include:

  • Personalised meal planning – practical advice tailored to your preferences, culture, and daily routine.
  • Medical nutrition therapy – evidence-based dietary strategies for managing specific conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, or gastrointestinal disorders.
  • Weight management support – safe, sustainable approaches for weight loss, weight gain, or maintenance.
  • Gut health optimisation – strategies to address irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), food intolerances, and digestive issues.
  • Sports and performance nutrition – fuelling your body for optimal energy, strength, and recovery.
  • Education and lifestyle strategies – practical guidance on label reading, meal preparation, eating out, and making healthier choices long-term.

At Chiropractic & Allied Health, our dietitians are Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs), recognised by Medicare, private health funds, and other health organisations. Their university training and clinical experience ensure advice is accurate, safe, and effective.

Working with Your Doctor and GP Referrals

Our dietitians regularly work in collaboration with GPs and other healthcare providers to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.

If you have a chronic health condition, your GP may provide you with a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan (formerly known as an EPC plan). This plan can allow Medicare rebates for a set number of dietitian consultations each year.

We also welcome referrals from specialists, allied health practitioners, and community health services. With your consent, our dietitians can provide progress reports back to your GP or specialist so that your care is fully coordinated.

You do not need a referral to see our dietitians privately, however if you are eligible, a GP referral may help reduce your out-of-pocket costs. Private health fund rebates may also apply.

Common Conditions Treated

Many people benefit from seeing a dietitian—not only those with medical conditions, but also anyone wanting to improve their general health. Our dietitians commonly assist patients with:

  • Digestive health: irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), coeliac disease, reflux, constipation, food intolerances.
  • Chronic disease management: type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fatty liver disease.
  • Weight management: healthy weight loss, weight gain, or managing weight alongside other health conditions.
  • Women’s health: pregnancy nutrition, gestational diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), menopause support.
  • Children’s nutrition: fussy eating, growth concerns, healthy eating habits.
  • Sports nutrition: optimising performance, recovery, and injury prevention.
  • General wellbeing: healthy eating for energy, immunity, mood, and long-term prevention of illness.

Our dietitians use practical, realistic approaches – working with your preferences and lifestyle rather than against them. The focus is always on achievable changes that improve health and wellbeing in the long term.
