Understanding Shin Splints
“Shin splints” is a common term for medial tibial stress syndrome, an overuse injury affecting the muscles, tendons, and bone tissue along the shinbone.
They often occur with increased activity levels, poor footwear, or biomechanical issues such as flat feet.
Common Symptoms
- Dull, aching pain along the front or inside of the lower leg
- Tenderness or soreness during and after exercise
- Mild swelling in the lower leg
- Pain worsened by running or jumping
How We Help
We tackle both the symptoms and underlying causes:
- Chiropractic adjustments for foot, ankle, knee, and pelvic mobility
- Soft tissue treatment on the calf muscles, tibialis anterior, and soleus
- Gait assessment and running technique advice
- Customised exercise programs for strength and flexibility
- Imaging referral if stress fractures are suspected
FAQs – Shin Splints
Q: Should I stop exercising if I have shin splints?
A: You may need to modify or temporarily reduce certain activities, but complete rest isn’t always necessary. We’ll guide your safe return to exercise.
Q: Can poor foot biomechanics cause shin splints?
A: Absolutely. Issues like flat feet or overpronation can overload the shin area, so foot and gait assessments are essential to the analysis.
