What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a modality of treatment concerned with the diagnosis management and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, with primary emphasis on the spine.
Your spine is the centre of your body. It connects your arms, legs, head and ribs, providing strength and structural support. The single most important function of your spine is to encase and protect your delicate and vital nervous system.
Your nervous system is the master control system of your body. Through your nervous system you coordinate all of your body’s functions and movements, adapt to stress, sense the world, think, feel and express emotion. Your nervous system keeps you alive and healthy.
Chiropractic Treatment
The majority of chiropractic treatment involves spinal manipulation and mobilization. Spinal manipulation is a very skilled procedure that Chiropractors utilise to restore the mobility to joints that are not moving normally. This treatment is usually done by hand. Some techniques involve the use of handheld devices such as the Activator. This is a little spring loaded hammer that delivers a very light but precise amount of force over a small area.
Sometimes tables with mechanically engineered drop pieces are used. These are all gentle and safe procedures that maximise patient benefit. In addition massage and trigger point therapies are often utilised. Deep tissue and myofascial release therapy is commonly used. Exercise rehabilitation, core strength and fitness advice are important aspects of treatment for the prevention of recurrence. Ergonomic and injury prevention education is another important aspect of our treatment at Chiropractic and Allied Health. This wide range of treatment modalities enables our practitioners to specifically tailor to the individual requirements of each patient.
At Chiropractic and Allied Health our chiropractors are university trained (a 5 year program) and registered as health professionals with APHRA. Each of our practitioners has years of experience. This is of such vital importance when it comes to accurate diagnosis and the application of the appropriate treatment.
Common Conditions Treated
Many conditions respond well to Chiropractic care. We see many patients with low back pain. This back pain can originate from disc issues, muscular strains and nerve irritation amongst other causes. Commonly low back disorders can create sciatica, hip pain, and referred pain to the legs. At times the patient may experience leg pain with no back pain. This leg pain may still be coming from the spine. It is not unusual for a patient to experience knee pain and disturbances throughout the ankle and the foot when the low back is not balanced.
At Chiropractic and Allied Health we also commonly treat, knee strains, calf pain, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis and heel spurs. We have “in house” scanner technology to accurately assess foot pronation for the prescription of orthotics. Orthotics can be very helpful in treating persistent low back pain, knee pain and foot pain. Mid back pain, rib dysfunction, sternal pain, and shoulder pain are commonly successfully treated with chiropractic care. Shoulder impingement, rotator cuff injuries, frozen shoulder and biceps tendinitis can also respond well to Chiropractic care.
Many patients present with persistent neck pain. This neck pain can be responsible for referred pain to the arm elbow and hand. Pins and needles in the hands and pains in the arm can often be traced back to neck problems. Tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are often alleviated with Chiropractic treatment. With so many people now spending so many hours at a desk using a computer neck problems are extremely common. Chiropractic treatment is a very safe and effective way of assisting people with these everyday problems. Unfortunately, many people resort to the use of pain medication. This rarely gets to the source of the problem. Headache often originates from the neck.
Tension headaches, cervicogenic headache and some forms of migraine can benefit from gentle chiropractic treatment of the vertebrae and muscles in the neck region. This can lead to effective reduction of the pain and discomfort of neck related headaches.
At Chiropractic and Allied Health we are a caring group of well experienced, well trained, communicative, professional health practitioners ready to assist you to the best of our abilities.
